Top of the World

Since leaving Don and Julianne’s at Clallam Bay, we’ve been on the road daily with the exception of one layover at Eclipse Hot Springs Resort, just outside of White Horse, in Canada’s Yukon Territory. The further into Canada we got, the less cell reception and WiFi we had – which is generally a good thing but it does make blogging. So, here’s a brief recap of last week’s travel log.

After crossing into British Columbia, we headed north to Prince George, BC, where we turned west onto the Cassiar. We stayed in Smithers, then Dease Lake, then joined the Alaska Highway at Watson Lake. From there we crossed into Yukon Territory, heading toward Whitehorse – where we took a much needed layover at Eclipse Hot Springs. Departing from Whitehorse, we got on the Klondike, toward Dawson City.

Top of the World

We spent a night in Dawson City, where JD, Lee and Kathy ventured through town on bicycles while I hung back at camp savoring some solitude. We walked the city blocks the next morning, then caught a ferry across the Yukon river, before venturing up the Top of the World Highway. Here, the boys broke out the motorcycles while Kathy and I drove the big rigs. After cresting the rise at Top of the World Highway, we crossed back into Alaska at Poker Creek – the highest port of entry in North America. From there, we descended back down into Chicken, Alaska, via the Taylor Highway. There, we stayed a night in an RV park and visited an old saloon and old dredge in this eclectic Alaskan town.

From Tok, we took the Tok cut-off highway to Glennallen, joining the Glenn Highway. We stopped tonight at a gravel pull out north of Palmer, where we are watching sunset on glaciers while the dogs play around in mud puddles, without any campground rules. The boys enjoyed their long ride on the bikes today. Again, I enjoyed the drive and my solitude, driving down the road, just a girl and her dog. Life is good, and I’m glad to be back here in Alaska again.

Wow, looks like fun. I never did Top of the World but Eagle, Northway, Tok, Slana, Glenallen and on to Anchorage was my ole stomping ground….my goodness, 40 years ago. Be safe, have fun.

FAR OUT! Carolyn & JD. Wish we were there. Can’t wait to get back North to Alaska. I read the Cremation of Sam McGee to our gang at Fort Peck on a fishing trip. Most had never heard it. No fish for Liz or me, but others caught a few Chinook. Then we went to Fort Benton, very cool, and then visited the CF Russel museum in Great Falls. First time for us and fantastic. Hope all is well. Namaste’, Liz and Clair.
